Together, we can confront addictive behaviors and then explore the causes; ultimately leading to a richer and healthier life.
Many of us have developed patterns of interacting or being in the world that causes us unwanted turmoil, embarrassment, or shame. Commonly, people have no idea why they express addictive behaviors such as abusing drugs, excessive gambling, or alcohol misuse. Addictive behaviors can be incredibly difficult to change, even if they have damaged or ended relationships. Most tragic, addictive behavior can lead to life-threatening consequences.
When working with those with addictive behaviors, I typically use a combination of theories and insights, which attempts to uncover the reasons behind the behavior. Treatment usually involves reducing or eliminating the behavior and then exploring other ways of coping in order to help one feel more in control, less shame, and hopeful. Additionally, I often work with people who are concurrently involved in self-help and 12-step programs.
Some areas I work with those with addictive behaviors are:
Breaking through the denial that keeps people stuck in destructive behaviors.
Uncovering why destructive behaviors are so strong and why they seem "automatic", and why that is important.
Healing from the shame of bad choices and behaviors while in the grip of addiction.
Learning to live a life with healthier choices and to feel positive about the future.
Learning how to overcome mistakes made in the past and to forgive yourself and others.
